What the evidence supports
A metric size such as 245/40R18 describes nominal section width, aspect ratio, and rim diameter. The calculated diameter is 18 + 2 × (245 × 0.40 ÷ 25.4), or about 25.72 inches. NHTSA directs owners to use the original size or a vehicle-manufacturer-recommended alternative and to follow the placard and owner manual for pressure and loading.
Three diameter numbers that answer different questions
The sidewall calculation produces a nominal unloaded diameter from the size designation. A tire maker’s published overall diameter is an exact-product specification, but its basis must be read in the chart notes: it may be an average design value or estimated calculation associated with a specified measuring rim rather than a physical measurement of the tire in front of you. Loaded rolling radius, rolling circumference, or revolutions per mile answers a different question about distance traveled under stated conditions. These values are related, but they are not interchangeable.
USTMA defines overall diameter using the unloaded section height and nominal rim diameter. Its replacement guidance separately tells installers to check the vehicle manufacturer’s accepted circumference tolerance and physical clearance through steering and suspension travel. That separation is the key: nominal geometry screens a candidate; product data and vehicle-specific checks decide whether the candidate belongs on the car.
Why the same marked size can publish different dimensions
The size code does not specify every construction detail. Tread package, casing shape, sidewall protection, approved rim range, original-equipment variant, and manufacturing tolerance can all affect the finished tire. Michelin’s current Pilot Sport All-Season 4 page says its chart figures are estimated calculations, describes the sizes as average design values on specified measuring rims, and notes that section width changes about 0.2 inch for each 0.5-inch change in rim width. That is why comparisons must use the exact product, specification row, and footnotes—not only the shared 245/40R18 marking.
Rim width matters most obviously to section width, but it can also change the installed shape and nearby clearance. The correct sequence is to confirm that the wheel falls inside the tire maker’s approved rim-width range, use the maker’s dimension on its measuring rim as the product reference, and then measure the actual vehicle where clearance is tight.
Choosing the right value for the job
Use calculated diameter for an early comparison, percent-change estimate, and a transparent speedometer or gearing screen. When the exact tire maker publishes rolling data such as revolutions per mile, prefer that product-specific value for a distance-per-revolution estimate and record its stated basis. Use a consistently measured installed circumference when the vehicle manufacturer’s service information explicitly calls for that method, especially when comparing worn and replacement tires on an AWD vehicle.
None of those numbers approves load capacity, inflation pressure, brake clearance, fender clearance, or electronic-system compatibility. NHTSA points owners back to the tire placard and owner manual, and USTMA notes that size changes can affect the speedometer, odometer, ABS, TPMS, four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive systems, traction control, handling, and stability.
The 245/40R18 sidewall calculation gives a nominal 25.72-inch diameter, but that result does not predict the exact installed diameter of every 245/40R18 product. Compare the nominal change first, then check the exact tire maker’s specification row, measuring-rim basis, approved rim-width range, and chart footnotes. If a drivetrain limit is expressed as actual circumference, measure the mounted and inflated tires with one consistent procedure.
A repeatable workflow
- Record the placard size, load requirement, and manufacturer-approved alternatives.
- Run the nominal diameter and circumference comparison and label it as calculated geometry.
- Check the exact tire model’s specification row, footnotes, measuring-rim basis, approved rim-width range, and rolling data when supplied.
- Measure installed clearance and any vehicle-required circumference value before treating the setup as accepted.
Where the shortcut breaks
A nominal match does not establish brake clearance, fender clearance, load capacity, speed capability, or compatibility with an AWD control strategy. Those are separate checks.
