Why AWD cares about rolling distance

An AWD system expects wheel speeds to differ temporarily in turns and slip events. A permanent tire-circumference mismatch creates a continuous speed difference that the clutch pack, center differential, or control system may attempt to manage. The consequences and tolerances depend on the exact drivetrain.

Worked staggered-size comparison

Compare a nominal 245/40R18 front with a 265/35R18 rear.

245/40R18 diameter = 18 + 2(245 × 0.40 ÷ 25.4) = 25.72 in
265/35R18 diameter = 18 + 2(265 × 0.35 ÷ 25.4) = 25.30 in
Nominal diameter difference ≈ 1.62%

That is enough to trigger a warning in a general comparison tool, but it does not decide whether a particular factory-approved stagger or drivetrain accepts the combination.

Manufacturer instructions are not interchangeable

A Kia AWD service bulletin published through NHTSA specifies that circumference among all four tires should be within 10 mm for the covered vehicles and instructs technicians to verify approved staggered fitments against the placard and service information. Other manufacturers express limits through matching tire requirements, tread-depth difference, or vehicle-specific approved sizes. This is why “all AWD cars allow 1%” is not a defensible rule.

Use a three-step check

  1. Compare nominal front and rear diameters before buying.
  2. Confirm the exact sizes and tire models against the owner’s manual, placard, service information, or manufacturer approval.
  3. Measure actual circumference or rolling distance when matching worn and new tires or different models.
Do not ignore tread wear: identical sidewall markings do not guarantee identical rolling circumference when one pair is substantially more worn or the tire models differ.
