Start with measured ethanol content

The name E85 is not a promise that the pump contains 85% ethanol. The U.S. Department of Energy lists the ASTM specification range as 51% to 83%, with seasonal and regional variation. If the calibration depends on a specific blend, test the fuel or use an ethanol-content sensor rather than assuming the label is exact.

Worked example: 15 gallons of E30

Assume the final tank volume will be 15 gallons. The tank starts with gasoline containing 10% ethanol, and the station fuel tests at 70% ethanol. Let x be the gallons of E70 and 15 − x be the gallons of E10.

0.70x + 0.10(15 − x) = 0.30(15)
0.60x + 1.50 = 4.50
x = 5.00 gallons of E70

Add 5 gallons of E70 and 10 gallons of E10 for a theoretical 15-gallon E30 blend. If the high-ethanol fuel were a true E85, the same target would need only 4 gallons because each gallon contributes more ethanol.

Account for fuel already in the tank

Real fill-ups usually begin with an unknown amount of fuel. Estimate the current gallons conservatively, enter its current blend, and calculate how much of each fuel to add. The largest errors usually come from an inaccurate starting volume or assuming the pump blend rather than testing it.

Why the tune and fuel system still matter

Ethanol blends change required fuel mass, cold-start behavior, corrosion compatibility, and the octane available to the calibration. The arithmetic does not authorize E30 in a gasoline-only vehicle or tune. Confirm the target with the tuner and verify that the injectors, pumps, lines, seals, and control strategy support it.

Practical routine: test the station fuel, estimate current tank volume, calculate the mix, add the lower-ethanol fuel and high-ethanol fuel, drive enough to mix, then verify the resulting sensor reading before applying a calibration that depends on the blend.
